Turkey Creek

When Turkey Creek Golf Course was added to the Lake County Park system in 1977, there was lots of work to be done. Over the years the park department has worked to make Turkey Creek the best possible public golfing experience while increasing revenues through the provision of banquet and concession facilities, increased rounds, and exposure of the sport to new audiences. Banquet on the Green overlooking Turkey Creek Golf Course is a popular hall for wedding dinners and other celebrations. Seating up to 250 people, it features a dance floor and adjoining full service bar.

Stoney Run

Dedicated in 1973, Stoney Run is nestled in the rural setting of southeast Lake County. The 316 acres of tranquil woodlands, ponds, and open meadows lend themselves to a peaceful experience. The eight miles of hiking trails let visitors get away from it all and enjoy nature at its finest, observing first hand the interrelationship between flora and fauna in the heavily wooded oak hickory forest. Stoney Run’s primarily level terrain is complemented by a ravine running through the eastern half of the park and rolling hills on the western side, providing for a great variety of wildflowers.

Lake Etta

Lake Etta, like all parks, is a program unto itself. It is especially designed to serve various needs of park visitors through its many recreation choices. Special programs held at the park are often conducted on the weekdays because the park is filled to capacity on the weekends and especially during the summer months.

Oak Ridge Praire

In 1979 Ninety acres in Griffith-Merrillville area were acquired by the park board. The future Oak Ridge Prairie County Park had its humble beginnings as a truck farm. The Lake County Parks, through a land management plan which includes prairie plantings and prescribed burning, has restored hundreds of acres of the prairie. Oak Ridge Prairie offers stocked fishing, hiking trials, bird watching, picnic shelters, barbeque facilities, volleyball standards, open play fields, playground structures, sledding hill and cross country ski rentals.

Grand Kankakee Marsh

Located along the historic Kankakee River, the park is dynamically affected by seasonal flooding. This, along with different natural communities, provides ideal feeding in the fields for a variety of wildlife. Densely wooded areas and the remnants of old river channels provide excellent habitat for a large deer herd, many species of ducks, and other wildlife. Preservation of these natural habitats is one of the primary goals of the Lake County Parks and Recreation Department.
